From NATS and FlightAware:

It was recently reported that around 2 million passengers board over 30,000 flights every day in the US. In the daytime, around 60,000 people fly over the country every hour. Chicago O’Hare International is the busiest airport in the world, and at peak times lands or clears an aircraft for take off every 37 seconds. These and many other reasons make Aviation, and in particular the Air Traffic Management industry in the US, incredibly interesting to us at NATS. Indeed we share a number of similar challenges and opportunities with our airports and airspace in the UK.

This data visualisation has been created in a similar style to Europe 24 and UK 24 – but this time showing air traffic patterns over the USA and highlighting the busiest airports. We made it in partnership with US based aviation data company FlightAware. FlightAware is the largest flight tracking data aggregator in the world in terms of the number of disparate data feeds they consume.

We hope you enjoy it!

Airplanes are so damn awesome.

What I love the most about airplanes is how much they’ve shrunken the planet. The opening message of ‘Living in the Age of Airplanes’ captured it well. Before the airplane was invented we couldn’t travel far from home. Trains shrank the world a bit, as did boats, but neither got you anywhere in a hurry.

Now? With a few thousand dollars it’s possible to reach any reasonably populous point on the world within 24 hours. Airplanes let us experience all humanity has to offer whether it’s by going and seeing it ourselves or receiving goods from faraway lands, and they allow us to expand our horizons while still remaining within reach of our closest loved ones.

I thought I got into aerospace engineering for the machines themselves, but the more I think about it the prouder I am to be a part of an industry that connects humanity in such an incredible way.
